NITI Aayog has been assigned the responsibility of formulation of National Energy Policy (NEP) wherein consolidation of energy data input is integral part. After formulation of National Energy Policy, NITI Aayog would need to review the action taken by the respective Energy Ministry to follow up the policy interventions suggested in the NEP. Creation of GIS based Energy map would be quite important and useful for above follow action and future policy corrections. Under SGWG (a working Group under India-US Energy Dialogue framework), NITI Aayog has initiated development of GIS based mapping for renewable energy for India in consultation with NREL, USA. The mapping for Solar has already been made. The Energy Ministries (related to Power, Coal, Renewable Energy, Petroleum and Atomic Energy) have their own energy related maps but there is no consolidated Energy map of India.

India is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy development. The Indian Government has set ambitious goals of 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, and is developing programs and initiatives aimed at addressing the many challenges to achieving these goals. Fundamental to turning these goals into actual deployment of solar and wind installations are data and analysis to identify the geographic distribution of areas in India with the greatest potential for renewable energy. To meet this need, NITI Aayog is planning to develop GIS mapping for entire energy sector/resources.

Geographical Information System (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. GIS can relate unrelated information by using location as the key index variable. Locations or extents in the Earth space–time may be recorded as dates/times of occurrence, and x, y, and z coordinates representing, longitude, latitude, and elevation, respectively. All Earth-based spatial–temporal location and extent references should, ideally, be relatable to one another and ultimately to a "real" physical location or extent.
